Established in 2022

Developed as a Place Based Learning project in cooperation with the Rural Early College Network, Hometown History has involved over 160 students at Winchester Community High School, predominantly students taking World History, Student Media, and a variety of Agriculture classes; connecting students to the community and the history that surrounds them. ​

Our Goal

The Hometown History project’s main goal is to increase awareness, historical inquiry, and tourism to our small town of Winchester, Indiana. We plan to do this by fostering student interested in our local history and businesses, research their significance, create a map of major historic sites, and create historical markers for people to enjoy. 

Our Team

Annie Fisher
World History

Annie Fisher is originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin but has been teaching History at Winchester Community High School for the past 5 years. She has a love for uncovering local history and helping students understand the interesting histories of their hometown. ​.

Dustin Shannon
World History & Student Media

Teaching since 2012, Dustin is a lifelong resident of the Winchester area.  He values student engagement and hands on learning.  Over the years, he has been involved in numerous community organizations, volunteered throughout the community, and assisted in the planning of the counties bicentennial events.  He has a true passion for the community and it's rich history. 

Leah Jacobs
​​Agriculture

Leah Jacobs is originally from Shirley, Indiana but is loving getting acclimated in the town of Winchester. As a third year teacher she has found it incredibly rewarding to learn about the deep history of this area. As an agriculture teacher, she enjoys showing students how agriculture impacts everyone, especially in relation to each student's local community. 

Looking Ahead

It is our hope, and intention, that this project will continue in the future.  We truly believe that the skills and knowledge gained through Hometown History is incredibly valuable to our students.  Not only that, but the results of the project are something that the community can benefit from and provide a history tour of our community.
